December - February
On the 1st December the pond and moat were completely frozen over, after almost two weeks of severe frosts and several light snow falls. Fox, brown rat, rabbit and plenty of bird tracks were visible, even across the decoy pond itself. Most of the ducks were still using the River Mersey and over five hundred teals have been seen in the Ramsbrook.

On Wednesday a member of the public, whilst bird watching at Pickerings Pasture hide, gave a member of the FoPP a cash donation towards purchasing bird food. It is very much appreciated.

The really severe weather, this December, and the even earlier heavy frosts, has made wild bird feeding, at Pickerings Pasture and Hale Duck Decoy, even more important and necessary than usual. With heavy snow on the ground and temperatures so low, it's not so easy for our local wild bird life to survive. The FoPP have already spent almost double their usual expenditure on wild bird food. We are very grateful that HBC has given us a substantial grant towards our costs, this year, which we expect to receive shortly.

September - November
The teal numbers increased rapidly during the second week of September with over a hundred present by the 10th. Very few mallard were recorded in this period but four shovelers were around. A kingfisher was also observed catching one of the many shrimps present in the ditches. On one day a greenshank was repeatedly circling the decoy, calling but it did not land. A little egret was seen on the decoy but was also recorded on the marsh during the very high tides. The moat, which had become fairly low over the summer, was once again filled by the tide.
