thumb_project_day_utilitiesThe FoPP spent their February Project Day, working with the Pickerings Pasture Ranger, in the Unitied Utilities area, where there is a path that leads from Pickerings to the Hale Duck Decoy. The land is marsh and provides a good habitat for all sorts of wild life and, shortly, nesting birds.

This is private land and access to the area is with the permission and support of United Utilities.

clearing_vegetationWe were involved in cutting back and clearing vegetation to provide good locations for ground nesting birds. We also hung a new gate between the United Utilities area and the Hale Marsh, clearing away the old gate material and staining the new gate with preservative.

We filled in gaps in hedges, to make the area more secure, and we removed tree ties, in places where they were damaging the trunks of growing and expanding trees.

Work clothes, tough foot wear and gloves were needed. The FoPP owns a good selection of the types of tools required for the days activities.

It was hard work but a really good and enjoyable out door experience too. If you'd like to help out with these sort of voluntary tasks, then, have a word with the Ranger or contact the FoPP on this site.
