The River Mersey, with its changing tides and wild life visitors, is endlessly interesting to watch but very unsafe to venture into. The banks are steep, the water very cold and the tide comes in very quickly.
There are extremely powerful currents in the Mersey, which can easily sweep you away. There is thick mud and sunken objects that can trap you. There are diseases that can be caught from the water, like Weill's Disease. People and pets have been swept away and drowned. The river is there to enjoy but it is important to respect its dangers too.
If you became ill, after getting wet, it would be advisable to seek medical advice immediately. If you witnessed an emergency situation you should dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. If the Visitors Centre is closed, the nearest public phone is in Mersey View Road, opposite the Mersey View pub. It is dangerous to go into the water yourself as you too may become trapped, pulled under or swept away.
