Have you noticed the huge incinerator chimney that has suddenly grown up, on the Ineos Chlor site, across the estuary, from Pickerings Pasture and Hale Duck Decoy? I wonder what you think about it. Pickerings Pasture is a reclaimed waste dump and isn't it just wonderful now. Why is the waste of Greater Manchester to be dealt with here in Halton. Don't we deserve a little beauty and clean air?
I'm writing this article from a personal view point. I've not had a chance to discuss the matter with other FoPP members yet. I do know, though, that some members of the Mersey Estuary Conservation Group are very unhappy about this development. To be positive, the construction will obviously bring some jobs to the area but how many of them will go to local people? The plant is not due to be up and running till December 2012. From the information that I've looked at, in the last few days, it looks as if the only real benefit will be for Ineos Chlor. While incinerating the waste of Greater Manchester, they will also be producing energy that will reduce their needs by 20%. Green for them but what about the rest of us! The waste that is left, at the end of the procedure, will be buried in landfill in Halton!! Why are we all putting so much effort in to recycling waste in Halton, only to provide landfill space for Greater Manchester? The chimney is about 340ft tall. What will be coming out of it? If it's output is very safe then why does the chimney need to be so tall? If you've any questions about the Energy from Waste CHP plant, you can contact Mr Craig Welsh, Public Relations and Communications Manager, INEOS Chlor Vinyls, Runcorn Site HQ, PO Box 9, Runcorn, Cheshire, WA7 4JE .
