Without doubt the 'bird of the winter months' was a great northern diver, a first winter bird, which was seen on the River Mersey, near the bird hide. Unfortunately it was only present for one day.

The scrape continued to attract good numbers of duck; in particular mallard, with over 75 being seen on one occasion. A small number of teal, one drake shovler and a few wigeon were also recorded. Snipe were seen on two occasions and, as usual, redshank were present on a daily basis. The star bird here was the kingfisher, which played hard to see at times, but was recorded fairly regularly throughout the period.

The bird feeders, at both locations, on the pasture, continued to attract large numbers of blue and great tits and the smeared fat attracted up to ten long-ailed tits at a time. Greenfinches and chaffinches were also seen in good numbers. A smaller flock of goldfinches and the occasional linnet enjoyed the cornfield area, in particular. Great spotted woodpeckers were recorded at both sets of feeders and sparrowhawks and kestrels visited the feeding area, attempting to catch a small bird for lunch.

During late December/early January large numbers of black birds were noted. These were presumed to be foreign birds moving into the area, together with a few redwings, song thrushes and mistle thrushes. In early February a pair of raven was seen displaying by the bird hide and, also, feeding on the marsh.

The first primroses were seen in mid January and by mid February lots of snowdrops and primroses were flowering.

A fox paid fairly frequent visits to the scrape pool, even during the early afternoon. Although the rabbit numbers are reduced, they were still seen frequently. Some people were lucky enough to see the common seal that was in the river in January.
